About Calibishie

Dominica is the northernmost and largest of the Windward Islands of the West Indies in the Caribbean, and is located between the French islands of Guadeloupe to the north and Martinique to the south. This is about midway down the arching chain of islands stretching from the Virgin Islands just east of Puerto Rico to Grenada near the eastern coast of South America. Dominica, once a British colony, is an independent nation and a member of the British Commonwealth. Our language is English, and we use the same currency, the Eastern Caribbean dollar, as a number of other island nations in the Caribbean. The EC dollar (EC$) is permantly fixed to have the value of EC$2.68 to US$1.

Dominica is approximately 27 miles long from north to south and 17 miles wide from east to west. Our island is lush and tropical with many natural wonders. We have several mountains over 4,000 feet high, and these trap clouds from the trade winds and thus provide water for our 365 named streams. We have freshwater lakes, a boiling lage (the second largest in the world) and at least seven georgeous waterfalls. Our land abounds with tropical blossoms year-round, and delicious fruits are always in season. Dominica also has magnificent beaches, some with white sand and some with black sand on both the Caribbean and Atlantic coasts. Dominica must be seen to be believed, and is a paradise for nature lovers.

Calibishie is a primarily agricultural village on the northeast coast, protected from the Atlantic by a coral-ringed bay. Calibishie has several beaches of both black and white sand, excellent for swimming or snorkeling, some having rivers or streams for freshwater bathing as well. There are small restaurants and stores in the village, and a car or public bus can take you to the towns of Marigot to the south, Portsmouth to the west, or even to the capital city and deep-harbor seaport of Roseau to the southwest.

Just How Beautiful is the Calibishie Area?

"Pirates of the Caribbean" was filmed in St. Vincent and the Grenadines. But the producers decided that Dominica's Calibishie area was even more beautiful, and between march and June of 2005, they filmed not one, but two sequels here.
